Had it in for a few months now, eveything has been fine. Hasnt pulled off too much skimmate, but thats due to there been no fish in. Added my pair of clowns 5 weeks ago and it slowly started to pull stuff off, but it was a bit thick and foamy so last week and adjusted the valve anti-clockwise to let more air in. Now it seems to be producing even less skimate??? Any ideas? Is it faulty??

Hi Guys

Im visiting USA over December, going to be in Disney for a few days then spending a week and a bit in Tampa with family. From there I'm going to Annapolis for Xmas and spending a week and a bit there over that period, then going to spend a week in NYC and then end off back In Annapolis, going to catch the train into Washington DC to do the tourist thing there.

So for all the Americans on the forum, other than the absolute obvious like statue of liberty and white house / Smithsonian can anyone recommend things to see? Iv never been to Tampa before so don't know whats round there, the family stays in St Petersburg so thats where Ill be for that week and a bit. Iv been to NYC before but never for so long so Ill have time do get around and see "different" things.

Any advice or ideas will be greatly appreciated!

Protein skimmers draining back into sump

I have never used a protein skimmer before but will need one when I start this reef tank. My statement and question is this. I have watched alot of videos on protein skimmers and how they set up, and have noticed that the water comes from the tank, runs through a filter in the sump, then thru a skimmer and back into the same compartment of the sump that it is taking the dirty water from. So I guess my question is why??? And also would it help if you ran it into a different compartment of the sump (meaning the next chamber), before it went thru the rest of the sump process. Also should the refugium be before or after the skimmer. I have also noticed that some people but a sponge of some sort before the last pump chamber that sends the water back to the tank to cut down on micro bubbles, and was wondering if that takes any of the food that you are trying to create in the refugium out.

Stocking my 29G BioCube

Hi all,

New to the forums and I have a question about stocking my 29G Oceanic Biocube..

These are my plans:

- Pair of Black Clown Fish (unmated right now, small)
- Yellow Watchman Goby
- Flame AngelFish (small)
- Sixline Wrasse (small)

- Pistol Shrimp - Caribbean
- Fire Red Shrimp

- Greeb Bubble Tip Anemone

- Corals

I have over 40 LBs of Live Rock and 1 1/2 Inch deep Sand Bed... Tanks has completed cycle.

My question is... Will this be too much for my 29g Tank? Right now, I have Green BTA and the 2 Black Clown fish.. As well as a few corals in the tank right now.

Thanks !

Another 40g breeder build!

It seems with Petco's sale that 40g breeders are getting popular! I decided to start my own build thread documenting the progression of my reef. This will be a slow thread but I intend to take tons of piktures. ('Caus what's a thread without pics? :D)

A little history... I have been keeping aquariums since elementary school. Started with a betta, now I'm addicted to salt. xD I absolutely love plumbing/filtration/lighting. I set up my first SW tank over a year ago and it's been through ups and downs, right now its an algae infestation. I plan to make that a FO tank and concentrate my efforts on a smaller coral reef tank.

So, with all that aside, here's some specs!

-40g/br AGA tank with a 1" overflow
-20g sump
-6 x 65W PC lights w/ moonlights
-DIY stand and canopy
-DIY ATO
-Euroreef RS-80 skimmer
-GFO/carbon reactor
-one mega complex electrical control system (Plan to do it as a project for my class lol)
-External closed loop (I can drill one hole but I don't want to risk more.)

Main water pump will be whatever pump I can find that's quiet and works great.

Not too much to show as far as pics are concerned right now, I will try to get an overall drawing done tonight so this post isn't naked. xD

I have bred all types of freshwater fish some hard and some easy, however, I was wondering how you get specific colors in the clownfish. Do you breed different colored clownfish in the same family, or what? I was always curious as to how these breeders got mostly orange with quite a bit of white or orange with larger black stripes then white and etc? How does that work. I have always been interested in colors, so was just wondering. Thanks.

Started off normal... went to ask the sales guy for the 40g breeder. (Awesome sale, 40 bucks for a 40g woot!) He goes outside to the vacant building next door and doesn't come back for almost a half hour... He said they were storing stuff in the other building for the upcoming remodel. Sort of weird I guess, but not really weird. While he was gone the fish department was un-attended, a little 5 or 6 year old kid comes up to a tank of neon tetras and tells his mom he wants one. She obviously said no, then walked away. The kid stays and as soon as his mom is out of sight, opens the lid of the tank and reaches in and takes out a fish or two and puts them IN HIS MOUTH. He looked at me (I was probably twitching, couldn't remember) and ran out the front door.

I loved that movie Finding Nemo, but I think any 5 year old knows they can't carry fish in their mouths.

I'm assuming strange stuff happens at this store a lot. I told the sales guy and he just laughed, saying there was a parent that tried stealing a gold fish in their water bottle.

Building the perfect skimmer for an rsm

I am new to marine fish keeping, and have (for difficult reasons) had to set up a tank in a hurry in the last few weeks. I ended up modding the hell out ofmy rsmto get it where I wanted (new power heads, lights, skimmer, media racks, uv, external canister and chiller, vortech- all in a few weeks).
I am a chemical engineer by background- and did a few interesting things in my career with gas/ liquid interfaces and also froth concentration.
When I fitted the tunze 9002 over stock I was amazed at how simple it was, how small it was, and how expensive for what you actually got (performs great though compared to stock)
SO I have decided I want to make a new skimmer- home build, to fit in the 130... Straight drop in unit.
It will be larger than the tunze to allow more gas/ liquid contact, Aldo have a more complex flow pattern for greater contact time.
I am intending to do a pretty professional build job here, and if it works build a few extra for people that may be interested (also so I can get objective feedback).
I understand skimming concepts pretty well, and design, but I would REALLY like some input here on where people have seen something on their units and thought- wow great idea, or neat design- no matter how trivial it may seem.
I am also thinking of hooking in a controller unit to allow different airflow/ pump modes to accommodate night time/ auto feeders etc to be honest that will be easy.
Finally I may as well make it ozone safe and build in a good breakout..
If people will help feedback some design input ideas here, and a few of the experienced guys will beta test some units after me, then we may be ale to get a sensibly priced, drop in, more effective unit. (I tend to only use the very best materials and pu ps etc though, so may not be cheap cheap).
Is there anyone else enthusiastic to try this- would love everyones input or ideas....

I am being hyper sensitive to ph at the moment as I am struggling to keep it where I want (8.2-8.4). I am buffered at 8.3, but it keeps dropping to 8.0 range.
Also using agrimight/ agrimilk type additives in water changes to ensure lots of natural buffer.
Reading around it seems the ph moves with the photocycle of the tank (or maybe it's a misdiagnosed feeding cycle correlation?).
Can anyone explain the chemistry of this ph shift to me and what the photocycle may be doing that would have such a large effect?
As usual I am addressing with frequent water changes- my preferred answer to most problems....

Good evening fellow reefers! I wonder, if I may be so bold, as to ask you guys some help with keeping an eye or two out for Blue Velvet Nudis for me? As many know, they are very delicate with a short life-span (3 months) and feed exclusively on Flat Worms (Which I have an infestation of!) I've seen them on-line for a reasonable $11.99 to $16.99, but, of course, when you add shipping, would be $100.00!! (LOL). BTW: I'm in Orange Co., Hudson Valley, N.Y.....Thanks all!!
