hello, we are starting a new reef tank. a few years ago, we had a 58? gallon aquarium that we originally used for a couple groupers and triggerfish, then later tried to convert it to a reef tank. FAIL! something happened, we woke up one morning to find the water milky and everything dead.

now, we are trying again new, with a 92 gallon corner tank. so far we have some liverock, hermit crabs, turbo and cone snails, emerald crabs, various shrimp, damsels, a firefish, and a sea hare. we started the tank about 5-6 weeks ago. everything seems to be going well, but we are very much looking forward to learning from some veteran reefers!

As some of you may know, I've started taking care of my sister and brother-in-law's tank as they let it go to pot. They have a huge cyanobacteria problem that I have been trying to somewhat control with, at the minimum, 20% weekly water changes. But of course, it keeps coming back because of their inadequate filtration. They have a 50 gallon corner tank that is not drilled. At the moment, they have a rinky-dinky HOB filter unit that is woefully inadequate, but it is the thinnest they could find because they don't want the tank too far from the wall since you can see the stuff on the back being a corner tank. They eventually want corals. I said no way with your filtration or lights. The lights are an easy fix, Filtration not so easy. The stand makes it hard to have any kind of sump/fuge underneath since it is a corner stand. I have measured down there and think about the max size for a rectangular tank would be like gallons. Not going to work. And they can't have a remote sump/fuge by drilling through the wall unless the want the sump/fuge in their dining room or foyer. This is a very old house built at the turn of last century so it has no closets to hide such equipment in.

Anyhoo, my brother-in-law and I pretty much agreed to chuck the corner tank and put a tank in their hall with a stand for a sump/fuge. I have found a couple of good used systems that my brother-in-law has liked but my sister keeps vetoing...oh, it's too tall, etc. I found them a great 65 gallon system with MH lighting. My brother-in=law loved it. My sister thought it was too tall which is nuts because the tank is one freakin' inch taller then the corner tank they currently have...ONE INCH!!! :banghead: Maybe the stand was taller, I don't know I didn't see it, but I told them earlier not to worry about the stand because we could always build one ourselves to suit their needs. Their current tank is 23" tall, and this tank was 24" tall. I don't see the difference. And this set-up was a steal. The 65 gallon reef ready tank drilled with all the plumbing, the sump, and the stand was $125! And they passed it up!!! They bought the MH light which was also a huge bargain. And my brother-in-law was talking about adding it to the corner tank. Yes, it will fit, but they don't seem to be acknowledging that they still won't be able to keep corals alive because of their filtration. I'm to the point where I just want to bazooka their tank :rocket: (after I remove all the livestock to my tank, of course). I wouldn't mind if my brother-in-law and sister were in the tank when I bazooka'ed it :chainsaw: I think it is mostly my sister's doing, and I'm really starting to get po'ed at her. She's never even had anything to do with the tank, and now she wants to put her opinion in all over the place. When I see her tomorrow, I'm going to sit her down and tell her that if she wants a reef tank, it ain't gonna happen in their corner tank UNLESS they let me pull it out further so I can possibly put a HOB fuge on it. If they wont let me do that then they either have to get a new tank in the hall or give up on the idea of a reef system. And I'll flat out tell her she'll never find a deal again like the one she just passed up. Heck, they should have bought it anyway. Someone on our local reef site would have paid more than that for the set-up. If they still don't listen, then I'm just going to throw the towel in on their entire system and let them have at it. Though I fear their livestock wouldn't last long. Okay, my rant is finished.

Anyhoo, does anyone have any additional advice that I can give them? Something to support what I am trying to impress on them?

This is definitely one of my favorite creatures in the reefing world. Kind of a dirty pleasure considering that they aren't exactly a coral's best friend. :) I wanted to post a few new pics of my RBTA's and a few old ones.

*Who else has RBTA's? Post some pics if you got 'em! *

This is a shot from the end of the tank. The top RBTA is about 9-10" wide and the bottom one is 12-13" wide when fully expanded. I FINALLY busted up my huge purple rimmed cap colony and gave them some more room. :D

*The Contest:*
It is time yet again to show what overfeeding and direct sunlight can do. Got a well water reef? It is time for a FTS. The 2009 Ugly Tank Contest is open to contestants. We are looking for tanks that are ugly, in any way because of nuisance algae or cyano -despite my attempt at a clever title - GHA, film algae, and diatoms etc...are all welcome.

*The Rules:*
Submissions must have a full tank shot (FTS). Only that picture will count towards the contest, but other supporting close up photos are appreciated.
You can reply to this thread to submit the photo.
Pictures must be submitted by November 30th.
We will be selecting the worst 4 tanks from those submitted. Each of these tanks will receive a $20 gift certificate.
At some point we will pick out some of the people we know that have had nuisance algae problems to judge the winner.

*Winner gets a free custom clean up crew shipped!*

Show us how bad it can get! Be prepared for some good humored kidding, but please don't be embarrassed.

10 gallon tank filter needed?

well I have my 90 gallon up and running and everything is going great. the more I read it seems the smaller the tank the harder it can be to maintain because the slightest change can cause serious issues.
so basically I picked up a bare 10 gallon that I would like to make into a FOWLR tank with a clown or two and maybe a chromis or two. but would I really need mechanical filtration for this small of a tank or would live rock be enough?
I basically want this tank up so I can fine tune my water changing and all that.

King Damsels

Well, I was at the lfs one day recently, and *BAM* the impulse buy bug bit me right in the a--. It was a damsel fish, so I felt pretty safe as far as it's needs, because I've had them before. I don't exactly recall the name they gave me, but I looked it up and it appears to be a "king damselfish". I went here for identification:King Damselfish (http://www.saltcorner.com/sections/zoo/fish/damselfishes/chrysiptera/Crex.htm) It's a really pretty fish, especiall when viewed under metal halides. The info on the site tells me that it's not commonly seen in the trade, so should I consider myself lucky?

getting a red sea max - couple of questions

Hi everyone! This is my first post ever!! woo hoo!

ok, so i have never had a marine aquarium before and from looking around over the last couple of days i am thinking of getting a red sea max (they seem easy for beginners??)

I have seen threads on modding the tank, is this necessary for a first timer like me?? i just want quite a small set-up to learn from (probably gonna get a 130D, but the 250 is very tempting even though i cant afford it!)

neway im rambling, my questions are:

1) is it better to put liver rock rubble in the place of the filter media?
2) how noisy is the beast?

Thats all i can think of so far but im sure there will be lots more once i get the tank!!!

Many Thanks,
